Having lost his mother at a young age, he was adopted by a former military personnel named Sukhoi who, among thousands of other survivors, moved into the Moscow subway to avoid the radioactive fallout.

Artyom has super sensitivity to light, having lived most of his life in the artificial darkness of the metro.
His knowledge of any language other than Russian is minimal.
